Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of black gram lentils (urad dal)
  • 1 cup of rice
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons of ghee or oil
  • 2 tablespoons of chopped cilantro for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the black gram lentils and rice in several changes of water until the water runs clear. Soak the lentils and rice in water for 30 minutes.
  2. In a pot, heat the ghee or oil over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and onion. Sauté until the onion turns translucent.
  3. Add the minced garlic, turmeric powder, and sauté for 1-2 minutes.
  4. Drain the lentils and rice and add them to the pot. Stir well.
  5. Add 2 cups of water and bring it to a boil.
  6. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a lid, and cook for 18-20 minutes or until the water is absorbed and the lentils and rice are cooked through.
