Aloo Rice | Potato Rice

Aloo Rice, also known as Potato Rice, is a popular Indian dish made with cooked rice and potatoes. It is a simple and comforting dish that can be enjoyed as a main course or a side dish.

Here is a basic recipe for making Aloo Rice:


  • 2 cups cooked rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 medium-sized potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 1 tsp chana dal
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves


  1. Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, urad dal, and chana dal.
  2. Once they start to crackle, add the chopped onions and green chilies.
  3. Cook until the onions turn translucent.
  4. Add the ginger-garlic paste and cook for a minute.
  5. Add the diced potatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder and salt.
  6. Stir well and cook until the potatoes are tender.
  7. Add the cooked rice and mix well.
  8. Add 2 cups of water and stir well.
  9. Bring the mixture to a boil and then reduce the heat to low.
  10. Cover the pan and simmer for 5-7 minutes or until the water is absorbed and the rice is cooked through.
  11. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.

You can also add other vegetables like peas, carrots, beans to make it more nutritious. You can also add some cashews and raisins for a different taste and texture.
